Bio
Aminah Hughes is a singer, song writer, spoken word artist, poet and filmmaker. Hailing from Western Australia, Aminah's passion for storytelling is evident in honest lyrics and an ethereal singing style that take the listener on a journey that has often been described as "beautifully haunting." An invited performer at a growing number of events and festivals, she has shared the stage with Tommy Emmanuel, Jimmy Little, GANGgajang and the Sydney Youth Orchestra, toured with cross-cultural singing group Yirra Yaakin Yowerliny and supported such artists as Aussie rock legend Robert James, Canada's The Wailin' Jennys and Ireland's Máirtín O'Connor Trio. Her creative endeavours stem from an early alliance with the arts. Already a classical flautist and theatrical actor, she joined Perth's RTR.FM as a DJ at fifteen, leading to a four-year stint as film reviewer and interviewer for the station's Breakfast show. As Young-Writer-In-Residence, she conducted workshops on poetic songwriting at the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers Centre (she continues to be a member of the Foundation's Alumni), inspiring songwriting circles and further workshops around Australia. Although her focus was on songwriting, Aminah has had spoken-word pieces published on national compilation albums, one of which was featured on Triple J radio's Artery programme and had airplay on London's Last FM. A finalist in the Lyrics Only section of the 2005 Unisong International Song Contest, she was awarded 2nd Place in the Social/Political section for her song about the conditions of women's prisons in Western Australia and again became a finalist in 2006 with her feisty, political spoken word piece, Out of Mind. Her song about an Irish convict transported to Australia in 1843 earned her a place as a Top 3 Finalist in the national Rebel Yelp Songwriters Award in 2008. Dropping out of a Bachelor of Music to attend film school, she trained in directing, with a lesser focus on screenwriting and poetry. Her filmmaking career saw her working for seven years as an Assistant Director on a number of Australian and U.S. television and film productions before she relocated herself to Europe. Her current focus is on screenwriting, songwriting, poetic and prosaic writing and singing. In 2009 she formed an alliance with Irish guitarist/singer/fiddler/blues-harpist Seamie O'Dowd (Dervish, Mairtin O'Connor Band, The Unwanted) in a musical partnership that has been pleasing audiences on both sides of the waves. The duo have played shows in Ireland and Australia and in 2010 spent the summer performing with Californian songwriter, Thom Moore. Having recorded with Australia's Shane Howard and Robert James and Ireland's Tony Reidy and No Crows, she is currently in preparation for the recording of her debut album. Sharing her time between the UK, Australia and Ireland, Aminah continues to write, create and inspire. -

What's goin' on Aminah Hughes? The expanse of your beauty is a void no universe could ever fill. If I could have just one wish, it would be to wake up to your songs in the morning. Your beauty is equal to the smoothness of a polished gem. Your intoxicating reflection can but incorporate freely into the powerful surface of a disintegrating mirror set afloat upon a swarm of locusts. Your eyes are like spheres of crystal water filled with shimmering dreams. Cities crumble, skies ignite spontaneously in your presence. Panoramic aromavision is the future. Blinking reveals the true visage of beauty hidden within your eyes. May you be as vivid as your hallucinations. Your reflections bring happiness that rends naked glass. A starfish's lifelong hallucinations of gelatin pools and of actuaries floating upon the foam and reciprocal ohm. All my thoughts are lost to your graceful gaze? The skin I shed is a perfume that makes water bubbles so terribly clear to me. I find your eyes to be a wondrous amusement park filled with neo-plastic pleasures and turkish delights.
