About me:
Welcome to the Brass Monkey ... Here at the Brass Monkey you can enjoy an intimate atmosphere with some of the big names in Australian and International music, including jazz, blues, roots, folk, pop and world music.*9th Sep: THE WHITLAMS (Special warm up before sold out Metro show)
The Whitlams will tour nationally in August and September for the last time before an extended break. Tim Freedman had finished writing a solo album, and before he goes into the studio to record it, he wants to take the band for a last jaunt around the country. They will play their usual long and rambunctious show extending over six albums.
* 11th Sept: Steve Edmonds HENDRIX & HEROES
Hendrix and Heroes is the latest in dynamic concept entertainment. A two part showcase of the most popular guitar driven music of the 70’s - for those of us who can remember them.
Set 1: HENDRIX
A surreal dedication to the incredible musical and visual imagery of Jimi Hendrix. (Arguably the greatest guitarist of all time), featuring a selection of his most popular songs. A psychedelic flash back to Monterey Pop & without doubt the closest representation of Jimi in the country, guaranteed to blow your mind!
Set 2: HEROES
An all star salute to the greatest rock bands of the 70’s. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy, AC-DC, Lynrd Skynrd, The Doors and more. The rocking hits of the greatest rock bands of all time… This set is guaranteed to fill the dance floor.
* 12th Sept: CUSTOM KINGS
Melbourne’s Custom Kings are not a band to be driven by fads or fashion. The Kings create music to challenge, captivate and to cleanse. We’d like to say ‘timeless’ but that kinda sounds contrived.
Moreso, this critically acclaimed group have absorbed, and portray a vast array of influences - roots, hip hop, reggae and folk, whilst simultaneously charting their own musical waters.
"...thankfully they've found the time to record a second Custom Kings album. Entitled Great Escape, it's full of sunny, sparkling melodies, channeling a classic '70s pop sound. You've probably heard the single 'Sunday' on your radio, a tune so full of energy it just makes you want to speed across a desert highway with the windows down and the wind lashing against your face..." * 17th Sept: SUPERHEAVYWEIGHTS
SUPERHEAVEYWEIGHTS return to the Brass Monkey in their first headline spot for quite some time with a tidy bag full of soul and funk. With original songs drawing influence from a broad array of artists, the band’s aesthetic is heavily rooted in old school soul and funk sensibilities from the 60’s and 70’s. Cooking up a pot of soul stew blending their brand new original gems with classic funky soul from the vaults by artists such as Al Green, Bill Withers, The Meter’s And James Brown.
* 19th Sept: Monsieur Moon + Peter Sot + Roming Netherland
* 21st Sept: PAUL GREENE + Colin Moore (Canada)
Paul Greene returns after his recent sell out show at the Brass Monkey... Paul Greene’s three and a half octave voice, catchy melodies, witty lyrics and unique arrangements make him one of Australia’s most exciting musical prospects. His music is a magnificent concoction of soul, folk, pop, roots and rock which he delivers all by his lonesome, with only a battery of well worn guitars, a stomp-box and a belt full of harmonicas for company. One of those rare performers whose songs are infectious and easily accessible, yet full of depth and complexity.
Discovered by Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst, Greene has built a loyal and enthusiastic following via a never ending journey through Australia’s version of the old Southern American chitlin’ circuit: a variety of well-trodden bars, clubs, pubs, town halls and small theatres in small country towns and regional centres, as well as established music venues in capital cities.
The inspiration behind Ben Harper’s ‘Diamonds on The Inside’ Greene has sold nearly 50,000 albums independently in his native Australia (which, per capita, would be similar to selling 700,000 in the USA) however, until 2008, his name was familiar only to music industry insiders and a close knit community of admirers around the country. With the May 2008 release of ‘Distance over Time’ on his own Whirl Records label (distributed initially by Destra, now Shock Records) the staunchly independent performer’s music reached a whole new audience thanks to his phenomenal live performances and rave reviews.
