Su progetto del Capitano Giuseppe Perrucchetti viene istituito con R.D. 15 ottobre 1872 il Corpo degli Alpini per preparare truppe destinate alla difesa dei confini montani. Vengono formate 15 compagnie che aumentano a 36, ripartite in 10 battaglioni, nel 1878. Costituiti nel 1882 i primi reggimenti, questi divengono 7 per complessivi 22 battaglioni nel 1887; il battesimo del fuoco avviene alla battaglia di Adua (1° marzo 1896). Durante la guerra 1915-18 (Prima Mondiale), formato l'8° reggimento nel 1909, il Corpo comprende 88 battaglioni riuniti in 20 gruppi, 9 raggruppamenti e 4 divisioni. Terminato il conflitto rimangono in vita otto reggimenti ai quali si unisce il 9° costituito nel 1919. Con l'ordinamento 1926 si formano tre comandi di brigata, poi quattro nel 1933, trasformati in Divisioni nel 1935. Sempre nel 1935 sono costituiti l'11° ed il 12° reggimento (questo soppresso l'anno successivo) ed una 5^ Divisione. Nel corso del secondo conflitto mondiale le divisioni salgono a sei, sciolte poi nel settembre 1943. Presenti nella guerra di liberazione con i battaglioni "Piemonte" e "Abruzzi" (poi "L'Aquila"), gli alpini ricostituiscono le loro unità su cinque brigate (Julia, Taurinense, Cadore, Orobica e Tridentina), gradualmente ridotte alle Brigate Julia, Taurinense e Comando Divisione Tridentina. Attualmente i reggimenti sono 8 e le loro Bandiere sono decorate di 9 Croci di Cavaliere dell'O.M.I., 9 Medaglie d'Oro, 22 Medaglie d'Argento, 5 Medaglie di Bronzo ed 1 Croce di Guerra al Valor Militare, di 2 Medaglie di Bronzo al Valore dell'Esercito, 1 Medaglia d'Oro ed 1 di Bronzo al Valor Civile ed 1 Croce d'Argento ed 1 al Merito dell'Esercito. -
