Lloyd Bosch puts life into song the same way his guitar strap cuts into his back. Rustic strumming, folk-thick vocals, and ethereal chorals merge and split in the gripping performance that defines Bosch’s sound.

Lifting folk to rhythmic, existential heights, the strongly autobiographical element of Bosch’s song is grounded by the archetypal lives of folklore: woodcutters, the oppressed office-worker, Heathcliff, and the beloved drunks of Bukowski (to name a few).

Backed by his lap-slide playing comrade Denis Phelan, the two meld ghostlike choral backings with an instrumental and vocal onslaught to stir their music into something both upbeat and sublime. From the otherworldly glitter of The Shins and Radiohead to the solid folk influences of Billy Bragg and Neil Young, there is a strangeness to the punch that makes Bosch’s sound unique.

Bosch's debut EP, Lloyd Bosch and Woodcutter, is now available at Polyester Records on Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
