On The Rise: Ed Sheeran
By Emily Zemler • May 17, 2012 at 11:55 AM
.We’d venture a guess that you’ve heard U.K. singer Ed Sheeran by now – even if you haven’t heard of him. The 21-year-old musician, who hails from Halifax, England, began to break out in the States earlier this year and as his debut album is set to be released over here this summer we’re putting on money on the fact that he’s one to keep an eye on.
.Sheeran, who has been playing guitar and singing since he was a kid, released his first EP, The Orange Room EP, in 2005, following it up quickly with his self-titled EP and Songs of Life and Hope EP in 2006. He released another, Want Some?, in 2007, making him one of the more prolific musicians we’ve heard of. 2009 Sheeran read an interview with James Morrison that said that the other artist had done 200 gigs in a year. So Sheeran played 312 shows that year. And this was before he signed with his record label.
.Sheeran’s big break came in 2010 when he headed out to Los Angeles and began playing open mic nights around the city. One night, while playing at The Foxxhole, he was spotted by actor/musician Jamie Foxx, who was an early champion of the singer. Sheeran self-released two more EPs that year, Ed Sheeran: Live at the Bedford and Songs I Wrote With Amy.
.
.Sheeran was signed to Asylum/Atlantic in the U.K. in 2011 after his EP No. 5 Collaborations Project went to No. 2 on iTunes with no promotion. The artist’s first single for the label was “The A Team” a track from his debut album +, which came out in the U.K. in September of 2011. The single was the eighth best selling single of 2011, selling over 801,000 copies.
.
.In early 2012 Sheeran released a joint EP with Yelawolf entitled The Slumdon Bridge EP. The disc, released as a free download on Valentine’s Day, was offered up via Shady Records/Get-O-Vision Entertainment/ Interscope Records.
.
.Sheeran will now release his debut album in the U.S. via Elektra Records on June 12. Curious? The musician will be touring this summer and will perform as part of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign at The Royal Diamond Jubilee Concert on June 4.

Thanks for the history, Emily. The more I find out about this young man the more impressed I become! Hey, there are quite a few musicians with the name "James Morrison " and they're all great. Electra Records was also the label for " The Doors" I believe.
