  • Bio

..Ben has recently completed a sold out tour though Australia & New Zealand with Micheline Van Hautem as well as performances at the 2011 South x South West Festival in Austin, Texas. Ben has also recently toured with Katie Noonan and the Captains and Lior. Ben Hauptmann is nationally recognized jazz guitarist finishing 2nd in the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz 2007. He also plays the Mandolin, Banjo and Pipa (Chinese Lute) as well as the Tiple and Charango (traditional instruments from South America). He studied music at the A.N.U. Canberra School of Music (1998 - 2002) from which he received a B.Mus. with 1st class honors in Jazz performance. 'Guitarist Ben Hauptmann, 22, has taken a unique place in the history of the jazz studies course at the Canberra School of Music with the presentation of a University Medal at graduation on Friday, May 17. He was also awarded the Bernhard Neumann Memorial Prize for 2002. He is only the second jazz student to win this prize in the 17 years of the jazz studies course.'source: http://www.guitarnation.com/articles/hauptmann.foster.htm Ben then moved to Sydney where he became involved in a number of projects including the bands Bertie Blackman, The Alcohotlicks, The Translators, King Curly, Wanderlust, Sydney All Star Big Band, John Morrison's New Generation, Exposed Bone, Son Veneno and James Morrison's Band. He also toured through China (Shanghai, Shenzhen), New Zealand (Auckland, Rotarua) and most recently with the Steve Hunter Trio to Indonesia (Sumatra, Java) as well as performing each year at most major Jazz festivals around Australia. ..In August of 2006 Ben moved to London spending eight months playing, recording and teaching. He performed in Paris, Amsterdam, Jerez and Granada as well as traveling to New York to perform at the 2006 Bass Player Live convention with the Tal Wilkenfeld Trio. 'Rising-star Tal Wilkenfeld brought guitarist Ben Hauptmann and drummer Chaun Horton to her packed clinic, which was best summed up by an audience member later on Talkbass: "The real stunner for the afternoon was Tal. She and her band were playing odd meters left and right, but it still grooved like no tomorrow!' source: http://www.bassplayer.com/article/bassplayerlive-clinics/jan-07/25328 ..In April 2008 Ben relocated to Melbourne where he has worked for a season with the Bell Shakespeare Company at The Malthouse Theatre, performed with Michelle Nicole, Gian Slater & Gerry Hale among others. In Oct 2008 Ben co-released The Alcohotlicks debut album 'You, You' at The Basement in Sydney to much acclaim. 'It's hard to not like The Alcohotlicks. There's an audaciousness in the line-up of two guitars, drums and no bass; a swagger as they maraud through country, rock, surf and funk like three Jazz Vikings, pillaging what they like..' source John Shand Review SMH 25/10/08 ..In 2009 Ben recorded guitar and wrote string arrangements for Bertie Blackman's 'Secrects and Lies' winning the 2009 ARIA award for best independent release. Ben recorded with the 10 guitar project, commissioned by ABC classic FM for Jazztrack with Mal Stanley and played album launches in Darwin and Sydney as special guest with the James Ryan Trio's ABC release 'Bitter Sweet'. In June Ben co-released The Translators self titled debut album receiving a 4 out of 5 star review in the Weekend Australian. Ben has become a contributor to Australian Guitar Magazine with an instructional column entitled 'Lead Work' as well as becoming a guitar tutor at the Victorian College of the Arts (V.C.A.). Ben performed at the 2009 APRA Screen Writers Awards with the Paul Grabowsky Ensemble and in late 2009 organized and managed a tour for The Alcohotlicks which include 10 gigs through Melbourne, Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney, Brisbane and Bellingen as well as master classes at the VCA, NMIT, Wollongong Con, Sydney Con and Jazz Worx in Brisbane. ..In 2010 Ben is regularly playing around Melbourne performing with his band 'Bob' featuring Chris Hale and Gian Slater; 'Bopstretch' a bebop ensemble featuring Sam Anning, Raj Jayaweera, Eamon McNelis, Phil Noy; 'Porchlight' with Andrea Keller, as well as Sydney bands 'Steve Hunters - 9 Lives' and Dale Barlow's band. Ben is the recipient of the 2010 Freedman Fellowship. .. ......

..Ben has contributed to the following recordings: .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..'Ben Hauptmann, meanwhile, tugs the textures in non-flamenco directions with his sometimes audacious work on acoustic and electric mandolins, without puncturing the music's dramatic and rather imperious spirit.'source: John Shand. Metro, Sydney Morning Herald 20/06/09 ..'Finally there are the surprises and extra colours of Ryan's saxello and flute and the judicious deployment of guest Ben Hauptmann's expert classical guitar and banjo.' source: John Shand. Metro, Sydney Morning Herald 22/05/09 ..'Ben Hauptmann turns his mandolin, alchemically, by some miracle of technology and magic of technique, into an electric guitar and, more amazingly still, keyboard: forget all your preconceptions about how it sounds and how it can be played.' source: http://www.australianstage.com.au/reviews/sydney/the-translators-1862.html ..'The wailing and growling trombone of Jeremy Borthwick also shows piston-like agility especially on the Indian and African flavoured pieces along with ferocious guitar work from Ben Hauptmann.' source: Jan 08' Limelight ABC By Peter Wockner .. 'Guitarist Ben Hauptmann is a fine jazz player and a brilliant exponent of all guitar idioms.' source: John Clare. Spectrum, Sydney Morning Herald 22/09/07 .. 'Second place went to Ben Hauptman. Ben's Canberra born and bred and a product of the jazz school and now resident in Sydney, along with his talented siblings, Zoe (bass) and James (drums). He played a more rock-influenced set. I loved his starter on Ellington's Caravan. Then an original ballad in a trad vein, Unity Hall, and a highly effected Billie's Bounce.' source: http://canberrajazz.blogspot.com/2007/11/guitars-have-it-wang-2.html .. 'Ben Hauptmann's bold approach earning second spot. Their twin-guitar attack in the Alcohotlicks was loaded with surprise, irreverence and the depravities of hard rock.' source: http://www.smh.com.au/news/arts/whitewater-ride-on-moody-river/2007/11/05/1194117954733.html .. 'Perhaps the defining sound is the banjo, which brother Ben plays on most of the tracks. But Ben's given it a strange twist, with this normally rhythmic and ostinato instrument played as solo modern jazz guitar. Weird, as it imparts a new choppy, staccato sound to a jazz guitar solo style.' source: http://canberrajazz.blogspot.com/2007/12/buttercuppin-hoe-down.htmllinks .. 'Feral and bed (where does she get these titles?) is Woodstock riffs and degraded, AM audio, then an 11/4 riff with great solos on guitar (obviously brother Ben).' source: http://canberrajazz.blogspot.com/2007/11/zoes-quirky-buttercups.htmllinks .. '…(Ben) loosened up with multi-octave arpeggiated runs and long, angular, cubiform solos, mostly using a distorted, sustained jazz-rock tone and occasional strange, effected tones.' source: http://canberrajazz.blogspot.com/2007/07/whats-house-of-reps.htmllinks .. 'Ben Hauptmann played a telecaster with some great solos, developing from simple to blisteringly fast and complex.' source: http://canberrajazz.blogspot.com/2006/06/wonderful-miroslav.htmllinks.. .. 'In the band's early days there was more of a country influence in the mix of thrash and jazz. That strand survives via an unplugged version of the Alcohotlicks, in which Hauptmann plays banjo, mandolin and exotic South American guitars.' source: http://www.smh.com.au/news/gigreviews/ alcohotlicks/2007/11/02/1193619095385.html .. 'The range of darkly brassy cymbal texures and deep drum sounds he produces is very much his own, and it contrasted beautifully with Ben Hauptmann's wide, bright, biting and superbly placed guitar notes.' source: http://www.sima.org.au/2004/08/30/pascal-schumacher-quartet-may-22-and-cameron-undys-20th century dog-may-21-at-side-on .. 'The introduction of the shell adds a lovely airiness, a contemplative moment to this high energy, vigorous album. It is accompanied beautifully by the warm harmonies of guitarist Ben Hauptmann.' source: Jasmine Crittendon. Drum Media 20/10/04 .. 'Gone with the Wind' alone is worth the price of the CD and is suitably reprised as track 9. Jonathan Zwartz's arrangement is a delight and showcases Ben Hauptmann's acoustic guitar solo.' source: http://www.jazzandbeyond.com.au/cdreview.html .. 'It's hard to escape the name Hauptmann around the Sydney jazz scene. Sister Zoe is a bass player, Ben is a guitarist and drummer James can be heard accompanying, it seems, just about everybody.' source: http://blogs.smh.com.au/radar/archives/2006/11/a_love_supreme.html.. .. 'the guitar of newcomer Ben Hauptmann sounded uncannily like a steel drum behind Cornwell's tender farewell.' source: John Shand - Sydney Morning Herald, October 25th 2004 .. 'Dave Panichi wrote the title track. It has an infectious driving bass line and features Ben Hauptmann with a superior guitar solo.' source: http://www.ralphpyl.com/Reviews.html
