  • Bio

.." 'Avalon Cassettes' is a delicately performed, meticulously produced and rather beautiful slice of aching melancholia. Hutchings has crafted a masterful collection of sparse, wonderful songs. Somehow messily passionate, yet wonderfully controlled at the same time, 'Avalon Cassettes' is the sound of an artist completely in control of what he's doing. Literate, worldly folk-tinged, classically influenced pop for the discerning listener." - dB MAGAZINE"It''s a feathery slice of Australia stalked by a looming shadow, at once as beautiful as it''s ever dark. Avalon Cassettes is a reminder of what''s been missed of Jamie Hutchings, a superb release by a prolific musician that isn''t just a highlight within his discography, but a highlight for Australian music." - SOULSHINE "Jamie [Hutchings'] musical journey is one the most interesting, passionate and singular musical odysseys in Australian music." - JOHN O'DONNELL (Author of 100 Best Australian Albums) " Jamie Hutchings has unveiled something special on his third solo outing. Avalon Cassettes is an alluring blend of Neil Young-inspired indie-folk and exploratory soundscapes. " Daniel Lewis, THE AGE - Sunday M " Avalon Cassettes, the newest, is enthralling, addictive work...The winning element though is the spontaneity and loose-hipped feel. There's a real drums-and-wires smell to the record. The room breathes, people breathe and cough and exhale. Intimate and real. " - THE AGE "It just feels real so very human, an antidote to a Trump/Today Tonight/royal wedding world with its contrasting earthiness and sensitivity, its hint of the bucolic and its undisguised intellect and adherence to traditional forms. Think 'Astral Weeks' made by a boy who grew up much closer to the parks and the pubs of Sydney's northern beaches than the backstreets of Belfast...there is no song which doesn't leave you moved, slightly shifted in your own bubble in a way that can't be quickly remedied. That's a sign of a very fine songwriter, one of our best." - Bernard Zuel, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD "...marrying his effusive narratives with beautifully constructed compositions that complement and lift his tales of Australiana to near mythic status. Jamie Hutchings is a national treasure – someone who embraces human interaction, notes their nuances and intricacies, and paints these pictures in careful, loving strokes." - Brendan Telford, TIME OFF "Avalon Cassettes is another stellar collection of pure and poetic Australiana songs that confirms Hutchings' stature as a songwriter of the same quality and ilk as the likes of Dirty Three, Gareth Liddiard and Nick Cave." - DRUM MEDIA "...like some loving incantation: light drums spatter a bed of wordless choral flourishes, while idyllic flute asserts itself against the melee, and you can almost see the quay flooded with solemn apparitions....Jamie Hutchings' art has an air of authority and purpose, a sense of space that is quintessentially his."— Shaun Prescott, MESS AND NOISE "Jamie's voice is both fragile, like a naive teenager in love, and wise, like that uncle at a family gathering whom everyone gravitates toward...pretty soon I'm going to get sick of pressing the replay button." - THE DWARF "[Hutchings] meticulously carved out such an identifiable signature sound with his immediately recognisable voice and guitar tones that musical comparisons are superfluous – this album stands up as a masterpiece amongst his sprawling catalogue. Australiana themes abound..Percussion rattles alongside field recordings of thunder and birdsong, bass lines and piano snake their way through the light and darkness of 10 perfectly crafted songs." - REVERB MAGAZINE .. .. ...... .. .. ..JAMIE HUTCHINGS :: HIS IMAGINARY CHOIR :: OUT NOW!.. .. Fifteen years of leading one of Australia's most consistently creative and critically acclaimed rock bands, Bluebottle Kiss, saw Jamie Hutchings write and release over 130 songs. During that time the band relentlessly toured the country, the US and Europe playing with bands as diverse as Beck, Midnight Oil and Dinosaur Jr .With His Imaginary Choir, Hutchings releases his second solo album, an amazing collection of concise narrative driven songs inspired by amongst other things, the exotica movement of the sixties and the singer/songwriter movement of the early seventies. .. Since beginning his career in the early nineties on Sony's Murmur with Something for Kate and Jebidiah, it was clear that Jamie's musical ambitions did not fit cleanly into the defined parameters of contemporary rock. Instead Bluebottle Kiss relentlessly explored genres ranging from jazz to country at the same time as developing a reputation for ferociously intense live shows honed from endlessly touring Australia the US and Europe. .. However as an antidote to Bluebottle Kiss' sprawling, epic double CD of 2006, Doubt Seeds, Jamie's insatiable curiousity turned not to further exploration but to constraints with his latest release 'His Imaginary Choir'. .. Co-produced by Jamie and Tony Dupe (Holly Throsby, Jack Ladder , Saddleback etc), His Imaginary Choir is an exercise in using simple yet alien arrangments and minimal studio resources to create a domestic yet amazingly rich sound. .. Lyrically, His Imaginary Choir frequently explores the simple notion of how we imagine we communicate. Whether it's someone trying to pep talk another into a new post-disaster beginning (After the Flood), the clumsy recollections of a first time meeting to a long time friend (The World Grows Tinier) or the deluded rationalisations of a man who dances alone for his own pleasure (You Don't Dance), His Imaginary Choir looks at a number of blurry scenarios where one struggles to connect with the other. As always Hutchings reaps unpredictable results. The template for indie rock singer/songwriters solo albums is country-tinged americana territory. His Imaginary Choir sees Hutchings mostly move away from this obvious path and instead follow through on his previous fascination for exotica and choral arrangements. There's an element of light and barely contained joy at times, with Martin Denny-like percussion and instrumentation partnered with a childlke naive kind of wonder courtesy of the Georges Auric-like choral arrangements. .. .. .. .... .. .. .. .. .. .................... .. .. .. .. ..
